A Reflection of Life of Betty Jean Modkins
Betty Jean Modkins was born August 13, 1958 in Haskell,
Texas to Mae Catherine Lewis and Albert Sharp.
Betty accepted Christ at an early age at Independence Baptist Church and was baptized under the Pastorage of Rev. Shellman where she was an active member for many years. Betty attended elementary school in Haskell, TX. Betty later moved to Midland, Tx and lived with her eldest sister Alberta (Luther) Oudems. Betty (Sharp) attended Goddard Junior High and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School with the Class of 1976. Betty ’ s work history began as a Sales Associate for JC Penny ’ s in 1979. She went on to further her education at Midland College and worked as a librarian. She met her future husband Ernest Modkins while attending college. In 1978 they married and enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. Betty was fashionable and earned the nickname “ Sharptown ” from her late brother - in law, Luther Oudems. She enjoyed decorating her house, shopping, gardening, and was a big sports fan with a passion for tennis. She also enjoys going to the movies especially to see her man “ Idris Elba ” on the Big Screen even if she had to go alone. To this union in 1985, they were blessed with handsome identical twin boys, Derrick Ray and Eric Eugene Modkins. Betty was employed with Midland Police Department as a 911 Dispatched Operator from 1979 to 1984. She began her career with Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages in Midland, TX in 1984. She relocated to Fort Worth, TX in 1988 and on May 7th 2012, Betty retired after 28 years of dedicated service. Betty cherished spending time with her twins and was active in all aspects of their lives and never missed a graduation, sporting events or anything important to them. Betty is survived by her loving sons, Derrick Modkins of Forney, TX and Eric Modkins (Tamika) of San Antonio, TX; three sisters, Alberta Oudems of Waxahachie, TX, Arie Lee Swearengin of Midland, TX, Stephanie Lewis (Earl) of Midland, TX; one grandchild, Ahliyah Modkins of San Antonio, TX; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles and all those who loved her. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Sharp, Mae Catherine Whitaker; brothers, Ben Lewis, Jr. and Albert Lewis; her sisters, Susie Kenan and Alice Collins.
