BIOGRAPHY OF MADAM GRACE AMA ABREFI DARKWA SUNRISE JANUARY 2, 1942 - SUNDOWN MAY 25, 2022

The late Madam Grace Ama Abrefi Darkwa was born on the 2nd of January 1942, in Akyem Anamase. She was born to Opanin Kwabena Darkwa of Biremuase Oyoko clan in Akyem Anamase, and Obaapanin Akua Ampaa of Aduana clan, in Akyem Asuboa. Grace was the eighth born of eleven children. Her mother was a homemaker and her father was a college educated businessman and commercial farmer. She completed the equivalent of 3rd grade and rest of her childhood was spent farming with her family. Grace Darkwa was married at the age of 16yrs old to James Kwasi Kyei Kontoh who she met in her hometown of Anamase. James was an ex-Military Service man (who later became Nana Adu Kyei II, Akwamuhene of Akyem Anamase). Grace’s husband was an “orphan” with three younger siblings who were ultimately raised by her before she was blessed to have children of their own. Grace had twelve biological children in her lifetime. Her first born were twin girls who unfortunately passed away at birth. Her second born was also a girl who passed away at an early age. Her third born was Mercy, followed by Victory, Cecelia, Charlotte, Moses, and Aaron. After Aaron, Grace had another set of twins. Her twin daughter passed away during infancy and son passed away as a toddler. After a series of losses, she was blessed with her last born Nana Kwame Tawiah.

Grace was a mother of many. Despite caring for seven children of her own, she invited her nieces and nephews to live with her and her family in Accra. She also cared for her husband’s family members and several neighborhood children. Many fondly called Grace "Amoa Awusi, Owo aba-Duasa San Gye Abay3n." Although she had limited resources, she never turned away anyone in need. Grace spent most of her marital life in the military Barracks at Burma camp. She traded goods as a profession and became a keen businesswoman with many years of experience. Although she did not receive formal business education, Grace received practical experience from the streets of Accra. Her children often accompanied her (sometimes wrapped on her back) during her market and trading experiences which provided them an early exposure to business. Grace was industrious and resilient. Despite experiencing loss, grief, and bereavement at an early age, Grace continued to work hard in order to earn an honest living. Her work ethic was observed by her children and each continue to exhibit these traits and characteristics today. grace’s primary goal was to help her family live comfortably in Accra where they had access to opportunities that she never had.

Grace Darkwa was a kind, loving, generous, calm, and assertive. She had a great sense of humor and was a confidant to many.

As her children became older and traveled abroad, Grace continued to gain support from her children who lived in Ghana, in-laws, and grandchildren. She was also an active member of the Pentecostal church which gave her great joy.

Grace’s theme of resilience continued when she moved to the United States in 2007. She battled a multitude of health complications but always preserved. She was able to observe several family milestones including graduations, weddings, and welcoming new grandchildren and great grandchildren into the world. Grace is survived by her six children (five in the United States, one in Ghana), a multitude of grandchildren, and great grandchildren. The family has lost a great Matriarch, inspirational, industrious, and virtuous woman of great character. On behalf of Her entire family, Children, Grandchildren, Great-Grand Children and all her loved ones, we say: Mommy, Mama, Aunty, Onua, Nanapa Damirifa Due Due Ne Amanehunu. Nyame Mmfa Wokra Nsie. Maame Grace, the entire family bids you farewell. May the Almighty GOD grant you a peaceful rest, until we meet again. May your memories be a blessing to all those who knew you.
