Helen Matroy

Helen Marie was born on July 8, 1938, in Hinds County, Mississippi. Helen was adopted by Lewis & Alberta Wright at an early age. She attended Jackson Mississippi Public Schools and earned a degree in Cosmetology from the Langston School. At eleven years of age, Helen was baptized and united with Hope Spring Missionary Baptist Church, under the anointed ministry of the late Reverend James McClenty. She enjoyed ministry as a child and became an active member of the Choir and Usher Board auxiliaries. As an adult Helen faithfully served in the Deaconess Ministry. She remained a devoted member of the Hope Spring Missionary Baptist Church until she relocated to Texas. With a flair for design and style, Helen enjoyed her career as a hairstylist. Always willing to try something new, a career change led Helen to the Veterans Memorial Hospital, where she worked as a technician. Returning to her love for fashion and customer service, she worked in retail until retirement. Over the course of time, Helen’s membership at Hope Spring Missionary Baptist Church would lead to an introduction that altered

her life. When Harrison Matory, Sr. and Helen Wright met it was providential. A love that was forever and always. To their union Delesia, Cheryl, and Harrison, Jr. was born. The family of five was complete. In 2011, during the sickness of her husband, the couple moved to Texas. Harrison and Helen resided with their eldest daughter until he gained his wings in 2014. Remaining in Texas, Helen united with the St. John Church Unleashed in 2014. With a strong desire to support pastoral leadership and a great love for her Senior Pastor, Helen faithfully served as a member of the Shepherd’s Support Ministry. Treasuring the memory of Helen are three children, Delesia (De) Matory-Conerly of Ft. Worth, TX, Cheryl Matory and Harrison Matory, Jr. (Rhonda) of Jackson, MS. Five grandchildren, D’Mozzio Matory, Jackson, MS, Harrison (Trey) Matory III, Daniel Matory, Dia Conerly of Ft. Worth, TX, and Trent Brookins, Pearl, MS. Two goddaughters, Emily Thomas, and Wanda Mattox. She leaves several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The bonus children and friends who loved and deeply cherished Helen are numerous.

Mom… We miss you more than words can express. You worked to give us the world and put it right at our feet. You made us believe, with you at our side there was nothing we could not beat. Mom you were a woman who taught us to never lose sight of what was possible, even when times seemed helpless, you taught us how to fight. You have shown us how to manage times of sorrow, to look to the future, and to trust the Heavenly Father for every tomorrow. Today is hard. As you closed your eyes and took your flight all we felt was pain. It is with heavy hearts we said goodnight, until we meet again! Forever Loving YOU! Delesia, Cheryl, and Harrison, Jr. Ou Meme… We celebrate the life and legacy of Meme, Helen Matory, our grandmother. How we love Meme! She was full of love and light. She always had a solution to every problem. We have been blessed with an encouraging and loving family that has uplifted us to our highest potential. Meme would always have a story, a saying, or just a good old fashioned “come to Jesus meetin” that would put us back on the straight and narrow path whenever we would stray. Sometimes it was just “keep your head on straight,” “work hard and never quit,” or” you bet not go to sleep in church.” How we miss her words and wisdom. Meme always took time to talk with us, sometimes with tears in her eye. She was always so wise! She saw, heard, and felt so much. She gave us hope for all the tomorrows that we would live and someday make an impact in this world. Meme could cook like nobody else in this world. She made sure we were fed no matter what. Mac-n cheese, cornbread, sweet potato pies, lemon cake, and don’t forget the lemon meringue pie were just a few of the amazing dishes that were in high demand. Meme, we will forever love you! D’Mozzio, Harrison (Trey), Dan, Dia, and Trent!
