R. L. Payton was born on January 7, 1950 to the late Ruben Payton and Jonnie Lee Payton. He was a great and loving family man. R.L. loved family above all. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, bar barbequing and spending time with family and friends.

He was an outstanding Construction Foreman and business owner. He was highly respected and considered to be the best in his profession.

He had a heart of gold, always looking our for others, coming to the rescue of anyone in need. He lived for the happiness of others. He was formerly married to Lucille Thomas, the mother of his children; Cameron Payton and Iris Payton and their fifteen grandchildren. He later met and married Mary Payton and was a great father, grandfather and husband. He was absolutely the best. He leaves to cherish his memory: five sisters; Betty Caldwell, Martha Herrin, Baby Lee Payton, Mary Ann Richardson, Earnestine Johnson, three brothers; Benny Payton, Freddie Payton, and Johnny Payton, and a host of family and friends.
