I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. ~ 2 Timothy 4:7 NKJV
J ERELINE S MITH C LACK was born on November 15, 1934 to Myrtle Lampkin Butler and Richard Moses Smith. She was raised in the Princeville Community where she attended school before moving to Gonzales, Texas to attend and graduate from Edwards High School in 1953. While in high school, she had the opportunity to travel to Dallas where she was the recipient of the State Fair of Texas “New Homemaker Award.” She would also go on to attend St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Texas. Shortly thereafter, she began her career in healthcare. She married Martin Ray Clack on August 8, 1953. To this union, five children were born. Jereline’s husband and children remember her as, loving God, singing, cooking, serving others, tending to her plants, caring for her pets, cherishing her family and documenting history and especially, loving her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was fondly known as “Grandma” and as “Nana Clack.” She loved them dearly and would sometimes have a household full of grandchildren and great grandchildren at least one week of the summer. Jereline was an active member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church of Gonzales, Texas for over 50 years until her health failed her. There she faithfully served in multiple capacities such as the superintendent of the Sunday School, director of B.T.U., taught Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, served as a deaconess, was a member of the mission auxiliary and was the food services manager. Jereline also worked in the Mt. Zion District Association and served faithfully in the Mission Auxiliary. She was recognized for her commitment to service in 2007 when she received the “Outstanding Leadership Award” as chairperson of the first Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist District Association of Churches “Women and Girl’s Conference.” She also completed the “Woman of God” Program at Cornerstone Church. .
Jereline was employed by the Gonzales County Community Health Agency for 34 years as a certified medical social worker and case manager. Her job was to refer residents to health service providers such as the Commission for the Blind, Cripple Children Services, the Texas Rehab services and other organizations. In the earlier days of her employment, she would make field visits to patient homes in the communities of Nixon, Smiley and Waelder. Patients would often stop her on the streets and thank her for the care she gave them or a family member or for the referrals she would make for them to medical specialists. No matter where she went shopping, whether in Gonzales, Seguin, San Marcos, San Antonio or Austin, you would often hear someone shouting “Mrs. Clack, Mrs. Clack”, and it would be one of her patients or a patient’s family member she had helped in earlier years coming to hug her and thank her for her assistance. After retiring, she found time to continue her education by becoming a certified phlebotomist at Victoria College in Gonzales. In 1982, Jereline was one of the founders of the Edwards High School Alumni Association Reunion. She was elected as the first president and served for six years and continued to support the association until her health began to fail. She was recognized as a Distinguished Member in 2016. With the cooperation of the committee members, the reunion celebration was a huge success attended by former students from all over the United States. Jereline served her community on the board of the Gonzales H.U.D and as an election judge. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. On May 28, 2022, Jereline Smith Clack transitioned from this present life to eternal life at the beautiful age of 87. A T RIBUTE TO M Y W IFE Jeri’s Smile Though her smile is gone forever and her hand I cannot touch I still have so many memories Of the one I loved so much. Her memory is now my keepsake Which with I’ll never part. God has her in His keeping I have her in my heart. Sadly missed, but never forgotten. Your Loving Husband of 68 Years, Martin Ray Clack
“T HE V IRTUOUS W IFE ” Proverbs 31:10-11, 25-31
Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. Strength and hon or are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all.” Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.
“AMother’s Crown”
Heaven lit up with His mighty presence, as all the Angels looked down, Today the Lord was placing the jewels, in all the mother's crowns. As He held up a golden crown, as all the mother's looked on, He said in His gentle voice, "I just want to explain each stone." He held the first gem in His hand but the radiance couldn't match His own. For He was the light of Heaven, reflecting off each of the stones. "The first gem," He said, "Is an emerald, and it's for endurance alone, for all the nights you waited up, for your children to come home. For all the nights by their bedside, you stayed till the fever went down, for nursing every little wound, I add this emerald to your crown." "A ruby, I'll place by the emerald, for leading your child in the right way, for if you hadn't taught them about Me, they wouldn't be here with you today. For always being right there, through all life's important events, I give you a sapphire stone, for the time and love you spent." "For untying the strings that held them, when they grew up and left "I'll place a stone of garnet," He said, "For all the times you spent on your knees, when you asked Me to take care of your children, And them for having faith in Me." "I have a pearl for every little sacrifice, that you made without them knowing, for all the times you went without, to keep them happy, healthy, and growing." "And last of all I have a diamond, the greatest of all gems, for those mothers who lost their children, When they came home to heaven before them." "This is the most precious sacrifice, So I give the most precious stone, for I know just how you felt, I too lost a child of my own." After the Lord placed the last jewel in, He said, "Heaven is now complete, for every mother has her crown of jewels, and all her children are at her feet.” Reverend Gary L. Clack (Sherlyn), Casandra Gilmore (Alfred), James Carter Clack (Angela), Eric W. Clack (Miesha), Kendra Lea Clack (“In Loving Memory”) home, I give you this one for courage." Then the Lord added an amethyst stone.
An Angel Sent By God God sent to us an angel from Heaven above, A heart filled with gladness and a life time of LOVE. You are a woman of integrity a woman of GRACE. With a vision of loveliness upon your face. Eighty seven years ago on this special day, God created you and guided you each step of the way. Our hearts are filled with gladness and our eyes are filled with tears. When we think of all that you have shown to us throughout the years.
You were a ray of light for the world to see. A very special gift God has given to me.
When you enter into a room your LOVE overshadowed all things. Your smile lights the sky, and makes the birds began to sing.
You embrace everyone with a LOVE deep down inside. Truly a child of God, let Him continue to be your guide. You are the wind beneath our wings, you are our joy, you are our EVERYTHING!! We give to you our love on this day, An angel sent by God, that only He, can ever take away. The love of a great grandmother is unique. God must have given great grandmothers to us to liven up our lives, to make our lives more complete, to make us well rounded and better human beings. Still, we can’t believe our lovely “Great Grandma” has passed away. We will miss our Great Grandmother, but her spirit lives on in each of us who have been touched by the love, strength, wisdom, and beauty of her soul. We love you Great Grandma! You truly were a special, special woman! You may have passed on, but your memories would always live on within us. The times we shared together were all such a delight! Thank you for your sacrifices, your care and concern, your love and everything that you have done for us. We will be forever grateful and thankful that you were our great grandmother. Our mother was blessed to have such a loving family and so many caring and thoughtful friends. The Clack Family will cherish your kindness and thoughtfulness extended to us during our time of bereavement. It is our earnest and sincere prayer that God will honor you with continuous blessings and with His unlimited abundance of love and grace.
