Obituary And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord form henceforth: Yea said the spirit that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them. Revelation 14:13 O RA L EE W ASHINGTON B ARNES was born to the late Samuel and Elizabeth Ellzey Washington on November 24, 1937, in Tylertown, Mississippi. She was affectionately called “Goo” by many of her siblings, family members and friends. Ora Lee departed this life on July 23, 2022, at Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She joined St. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and attended faithfully. After completing high school at Ginn Town High School in Tylertown, Mississippi, she met the love of her life, Caldwell Barnes. Ora and Caldwell were united in holy matrimony on September 27, 1956. They moved to Gary, Indiana and started a family. Four children were born to their union. In Gary, Ora united with and faithfully attended New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Clarence Lobdell. She brought her children up in both church and Sunday school. In 1971, Caldwell and Ora returned to Mississippi with their four (4) children and reunited with St. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Ora sang in the choir and became the church secretary. She also worked at Eva Gordon Elementary School. She retired from Eva Gordon Elementary School in the late 1990’s. Ora served as St. Chapel Church secretary for many decades until her health began to decline. In her middle-aged years, Ora and Caldwell raised their grandson, Desmond Patterson. She was a loving wife, mother, homemaker, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, and aunt. She was extremely proud of her crew and her face beamed and her voice sang when she spoke about them. After her beloved Caldwell passed in 1995, she was often asked why she did not remarry. Her reply was, “because the first time a new husband calls one of my grandchildren bad, I’ll pack his stuff and put him flat out.” Ora was preceded in death by her parents Samuel and Elizabeth Washington, her husband, Caldwell Barnes, (12) siblings: Sam Jr, J.W. George, James, William, Bernice, Edrena, Alma, Gloria, Annie Rose, Nadean and Nellie Mae. She is also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law: Geneva (Don) Barnes, a great granddaughter (Arianna Ellis) and numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. She leaves to cherish fond memories four children: Debra (Jerry) Hill of Spring, Texas, Don Barnes of Grand Prairie, Texas, Anthony (Tonya) Barnes of Hephzibah, Georgia, and Patricia (Johnny) Wells of Grand Prairie, Texas. She leaves behind thirteen (13) grandchildren, thirty-seven (37) great grandchildren and three (3) great great grandchildren. She also leaves fond memories to cherish to one sister, Elizabeth Washington Smith of McComb, Mississippi. In addition, she leaves two sisters-in-law: Annie Washington of Osyka, Mississippi and Emma Lee Washington of Houma, Louisiana, and a host of special nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.

We still don’t know how it happened that we ended up with you To calm our fears, dry our tears and navigate us through, the mountains highs and valleys lows, the twist we didn’t see. The kicks in the gut when we could get up and you willed us to keep going. You’d say, “straighten your face dry your eyes,

you have what it takes to get through this. Your dad and I put in you all that we had, you’re a winner and it’s time that you knew it.

We ate your cookies and cakes until our bellies ached and we loved your fried chicken, pot roast and yams and each one of us when you sum us up can say “You are the reason, I AM”.

You busied about like a Christmas mouse filling shoe boxes with candy and fruit, with toys hid a way in the most secret of spaces, so excited and we had not a clue.

Demure on the surface, you appeared easy going and for the most part, you were but if they messed with us children right in front of their eyes, you became an invincible bear.

The years grew long and your strength did fade, But you still stood and cheered us on The same relentless song that you sang all along “You’re a winner, I know you can do this.

We still can’t figure it out, how it came about that we ended up with you. But of this we are sure, when we look at our lot in you we hit the “Jackpot”.

To Our Grand Mother One of the greatest loves in a young child's life is that of a grandparent. AffecƟonately known as Granny and Grandma to her grandchildren, she taught us cooking, sewing, and gardening on her country land in Magnolia, MS. Granny was a matriarch like no other and biƟng her tongue was not her style. She spoke the truth in love and her words of wisdom oozed with the experiences of life, love, and fight, yielding valuable lessons that no book could teach. Her life packed a punch that will rest in our memories forever. GOD has you in HIS keeping, we have you in our hearts. For every sacrifice, we are forever grateful and thankful that you are our Granny . Lov You Gandchildre, Gea Gandchildre, & Geat - grea Gan Children

Granny, You were the only one I answered to that called me Mandy. You listened to me cry as a teenager and you gave me unfiltered advice as an adult. You were a prayer warrior for Andrus when he was born at 30 weeks, and you were there to hold him soon aŌer he came home. Spending the night at your house oŌen meant calling dibs on who got to sleep with you. I'll always remember waking up next to you, hearing you speak soŌly with one arm stretched in the air. I asked you what you were doing. Your response was, "I'm praying baby." You leŌ me with memories that make laugh, some that make me cry, and some that make me cry from laughing. If you knew granny, you knew she didn't have a filter and said whatever was on her mind. We went from you making me tea cakes to me making you mixed drinks. I'll always love you LiƩle Ora. Take your rest .

Grandma, I've always adored how much you love your family, and to be honest that will forever sƟck with me and inspire me to have that kind of love. I miss you every day grandma, and there's not a day that I do not think about you. I wish that I saw you one last Ɵme, and I wish I got to say a proper goodbye. I will make sure to one day tell stories about you to my kids and my grandkids, And I will tell them how much I wish they would've met you. But I know you're looking down on us and that you're finally at peace. Heaven gained an angel, and I will see you again soon. Grandma and tell my mama I'm holding it down on this place called earth and I miss her too every day.

Love Your Granddaughter, Joscelyn

Love Your Granddaughter, Mandy

I sit and ponder, how very much I’d like to talk with you today. There are so many things that we didn’t get to say. I know how much you care for me and how much I care for you. And each time that I think of you I know you’ll miss me too. An angel came and took you by the hand and said your place was ready in Heaven far above. And you had to leave behind all those you dearly loved. You had so much to live for, you had so much to do. It still seems impossible that God was taking you. And though your life on earth is past, in Heaven it starts anew. You’ll live for all eternity, just as God has promised you. And though you’ve walked through Heaven’s gate, we are never far apart. For every time I think of you, you’re right here deep with-in my heart! Love Your Sister, Elizabeth
